A standard Research computer will have the following software installed, depending on the platform.

This page is for listing purpose only, not for installation instructions.

Windows XP

For 32-bit platforms, Windows XP Professional (x86, Corporate VLK edition) is the ONLY officially supported Windows operating system.

Windows 7

For multicore 64-bit hardware, Windows 7 Enterprise Edition is standard

Standard Windows (64- and 32-bit) Packages

  • Device drivers, including printers
  • 7Zip
  • Adobe Creative Suite 6
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
    • This is for reading PDF documents, while Acrobat Professional is for creating/editing.
    • Install Acrobat Reader AFTER Creative Suite.
Installing Reader as the last .pdf handler makes it become the default, which has no license limitations. Acrobat Professional (.pdf handler included in Creative Suite) should ONLY be used when you need to edit PDF files. Using it to view PDFs will needlessly tie up a license.
  • Adobe Updates
    • launch from the Help menu in any Creative Suite applications
  • Audacity
  • Autodesk Building Design Suite Ultimate 2014 (contains AutoCAD, Revit, Architecture, MEP, SketchBook, Raster Design, ReCap, 3ds Max Design, Inventory, InfraWorks, Robot Structural Analysis Professional)
  • Autodesk Maya
  • CityEngine (ver 2010)
  • CPUZ - a system information utility.
  • Cycling 74 MAX/MSP/Jitter (ver 5.1.9)
  • Firefox
  • Google Sketchup Pro
  • Google Chrome
  • ImgBurn (CD/DVD burner)
  • Java Development Kit (JDK) 6 (Sun Microsystems)
  • Sassafras K2 Keyserver Client
  • Trend Micro OfficeScan
  • Microsoft DirectX Runtimes (latest)
  • Microsoft .Net Framework (latest)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer
  • NotePad Plus (text editor)
  • Microsoft Office 2010 (only available for university-owned computers that are on campus at least 90% of the time).
  • PuTTY (telnet / ssh client)
  • Solidworks
  • VLC Media Player
    • supports VCD, DVD, AVI, MKV, Ogg, OGM, 3GP, MPEG-1/2/4, WMV, RealMedia, FLV and QuickTime
  • WinSCP (FTP client)

On Request

  • AtlasTi
  • Mathworks Matlab
SIAT has a limited number of Matlab licenses with a small subset of the toolboxes. For the complete toolbox set, we recommend using the SFU campus version which also supports many more simultaneous license uses than SIAT's does. The only limitation with the SFU version is that you must be connected to the campus network for their version of Matlab to run. Users must register and download their own personal version from this link
  • Other Microsoft software: researchers can access a wide variety of Microsoft software through the SIAT MSDNAA program: https://www.sfu.ca/itservices/technical/computerlabs/surreylabs/lab_support_services/siat_msdnaa.html
  • SPSS is available through the SFU software portal: http://www.sfu.ca/itservices/technical/software.html
If your credentials don't allow you to download SPSS, please contact us (SIAT IT services) and we can install it for you.

Linux

Complete install Ubuntu

  • Auto-update
  • Both KDE and GNOME, maybe some other WMs too.

Mac OS-X

Complete install of OS 10.4 with all updates, XCode Tools

  • Mathworks Mathlab
SIAT has a limited number of Matlab licenses with a small subset of the toolboxes. For the complete toolbox set, we recommend using the SFU campus version which also supports many more simultaneous license uses than SIAT's does. The only limitation with the SFU version is that you must be connected to the campus network for their version of Matlab to run. Microsoft Office 365

For use on personal computers or university-owned computers that will spend most of their time off-campus, consider using Microsoft Office 365 which is freely available to students, staff and faculty. Please see this link for more information: Microsoft Office 365

More Software

There are multiple software items available to staff and faculty due to campus license agreements. Not all downloads are available to all staff and faculty. This software must be downloaded and installed by the end user because it relies on user credentials to determine eligibility and for licensing information.
