This is the plan for a complete lab re-install in the Summer of 2006. Machines will be loaded with Windows XP and SUSE Linux. Each machine will be configured with the following applications.

Windows XP SP2

All latest patches.

  • Adobe Creative Suite 2:
    • Adobe Photoshop CS
    • Adobe InDesign
    • Adobe GoLive!
    • Adobe Illustrator
    • Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional
      • During install, set the default .pdf handler to be the Acrobat Reader!
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 7
    • Install Adobe Reader AFTER Adobe Professional (and set Reader as default)
  • Adobe ImageReady
  • Adobe Premiere Pro
  • ASUS Probe (motherboard monitoring)
  • AtlasTi
  • iTunes & Quicktime (Bundled together)
  • Java 1.5 J2SE SDK Download Link
  • K2 client http://www.sassafras.com/k2/revisions/downloads.html
  • MacAfee AV 8 Ent.
  • Macromedia Suite 8 (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Freehand)
    • Run one of the applications and enter our serial number in!!
  • Nero (CD/DVD burning)
  • Microsoft Office - complete install
  • Mozilla Firefox - set as default browser.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird email client
  • NikonView (free download)
  • Nikon Capture Editor, Camera Control (needs to be keyserved)
    • must first perform install using our original CD, AND you must run it. This embeds the licensing, which is mandatory for succesful downloads/upgrades from Nikon's web site http://nikonusa.com -> Software Downloads. you must upgrade incrementally, several times (ie from 4.2 to 4.3 to 4.4).
  • nVidia video
    • latest unified driver, for FX5200 / FX5600 cards
  • PuTTY
    • Dream for one day: Defaults for fraser and our shell box?
  • RealPlayer
    • when installing RealPlayer, manually de-select every single media-type which has another association already (such as Windows Media Player). Installing other players (like Quicktime) after RealPlayer will ensure they handle the media-types they should. Restrict RealPlayer to as few media-types as possible :-)
    • disable the Real Message Center. Turn it off so it doesn't even load in the System Tray.
  • SpyBot Search and Destroy http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/countit.asp?fid=22262&fileidx=1
  • OpenOffice 2.0
  • WinSCP
    • Dream, for one day: include defaults for connecting to tirpitz, surrey, and fraser
  • Lexmark T630-capable printer drivers
  • HP 4600n-capable printer drivers
    • printer-info needs to be added to Research web-info:
    • IP-addresses, location, capabilities, where to get supplies, how to add them in Linux/Irix/OS-X/WinXP
    • how to query the printer for int. info (IP-address, name, no. of pages, toner-levels, etc)
  • Windows Server Update Services - Automated Windows Updates

Linux

Complete install of SuSE 9.3 Pro.

  • Auto-update.
  • Both KDE and GNOME, maybe some other WMs too.
  • Development tools
    • Eclipse (Java & C++ support)
    • Fortran stuff
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • totem, mplayer, xine?
    • fully working!!! DeCSS, MP3, AAC, etc
  • K3B for cd/dvd writing
    • Mark: add ldap users to cd writing group!
    • Robin: SUSE9.3 should have pam_console, which is the proper solution.

Mac OS-X

Complete install of OS 10.4 with all updates, XCode Tools
