I Can Haz Server?
Need root access? Want to avoid port collisions? Got a file permissions problem?
- For those projects that require it, we can provide virtual servers that give you the benefits of a stand-alone server while also providing easy changes to the number of CPUs, RAM size, and disk space. These servers are hosted by the Information Technology Infrastructure (ITI) department in Burnaby.
- The virtual server reads an SFU mailing list to see who has administrator access, so managing the administrators is a simple process. Administrators can connect to the virtual server via SSH and use sudo to give themselves root access. From there, they can set up local user accounts and specify their permissions for the server.
- The server will have an external IP address that can be used with registrar DNSs. In other words, your domain name (eg: www.mydomainname.com) can resolve directly to your virtual server.
- ITI will set up the server with a basic OS and software, commonly consisting of a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). It is up to the owner of the server to install the rest (eg: Wordpress, Drupal, Wiki).
