Research Workstations - default software loads

This is the plan for a complete lab re-install in the Summer of 2005. Machines will be loaded with Windows XP and SUSE Linux. Each machine will be configured with the following applications.

Windows XP SP2

All latest patches.

  • Software Update Services - Automated Windows Updates
  • MacAfee AV 8 Ent.
  • K2 client http://www.sassafras.com/k2/revisions/downloads.html
    • point to research-keyserver.iat.sfu.ca
  • Adobe Acrobat Pro
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 7
    • Set this as default .pdf handler (Acrobat Pro will try to "steal" default)
  • Adobe Photoshop CS
  • Adobe ImageReady
  • Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Adobe InDesign
  • Adobe GoLive!
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • ASUS Probe (motherboard monitoring)
  • AtlasTi
  • Firefox browser - set as default browser.
  • iTunes
  • Java
    • at least JRE, preferably J2SE SDK
    • Sun or one of the alternatives? IBM/BEA JRockit appears to be very good.
  • Macromedia Dreamweaver
  • Macromedia Fireworks
  • Macromedia Flash
  • Macromedia Freehand
  • Microsoft Office - complete install
  • Morae
  • Nero (CD/DVD burning)
  • NikonView (free download)
  • Nikon Capture Editor, Camera Control (needs to be keyserved)

    • latest unified driver, for FX5200 / FX5600 cards
  • Oracle Calendar client - still discussing if Grads are eligible & would use
    • :-( only full-time/permanent SFU people will get access to OracleCalendar (ACS policy)
  • PuTTY
    • Defaults for fraser and our shell box?
  • Quicktime
  • RealPlayer
  • StarOffice 2.0
  • Thunderbird email client
  • WinSCP
    • include defaults for connecting to tirpitz, surrey, and fraser
  • Lexmark T630-capable printer drivers
  • HP 4600n-capable printer drivers
    • printer-info needs to be added to Research web-info:
    • IP-addresses, location, capabilities, where to get supplies, how to add them in Linux/Irix/OS-X/WinXP
    • how to query the printer for int. info (IP-address, name, no. of pages, toner-levels, etc)

Linux

Complete install of SuSE 9.3 Pro.

  • Auto-update.
  • Both KDE and GNOME, maybe some other WMs too.
  • Development tools
    • Eclipse (Java & C++ support)
    • Fortran stuff
  • FireFox web-browser
  • totem, mplayer, xine?
    • fully working!!! DeCSS, MP3, AAC, etc
  • K3B for cd/dvd writing
    • Mark: add ldap users to cd writing group!
    • Robin: SUSE9.3 should have pam_console, which is the proper solution.
