Research Servers - default software loads

SuSE Linux

Complete install of SuSE 9.3 Pro.

  • Auto-update.
  • Either KDE and GNOME
    • should not be running, by default (just available)
  • Development tools
  • FireFox web-browser
  • K3B for cd/dvd writing
  • logwatch, set to e-mail daily to research-admin
  • amanda-client
  • tripwire intrusion-detection
  • SSHd AllowUsers directive should be used; root login allowed (for admin reasons)
    • Mark: add ldap users to cd writing group!
    • Robin: SUSE9.3 should have pam_console, which is the proper solution.


Gentoo Linux

  • Development tools
