Research Workstations - default software loads

A standard Research computer will have the following software installed.

Windows XP SP2

All latest patches.

  • Adobe Creative Suite 2:
    • Adobe Photoshop CS
    • Adobe InDesign
    • Adobe GoLive!
    • Adobe Illustrator
    • Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional
      • During install, set the default .pdf handler to be the Acrobat Reader!
    • On Windows XP Pro x64 machines, install CS2 in a separate Adobe folder, not Program Files or Program Files (x86)
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 7
    • Install Adobe Reader AFTER Adobe Professional (and set Reader as default)
  • Adobe ImageReady
  • Adobe Premiere Pro
  • ASUS Probe (motherboard monitoring)

  • iTunes & Quicktime (Bundled together)

    • Run one of the applications and enter our serial number in!!

  • NikonView (free download)
  • Nikon Capture Editor, Camera Control (needs to be keyserved)
    • must first perform install using our original CD, AND you must run it. This embeds the licensing, which is mandatory for succesful downloads/upgrades from Nikon's web site http://nikonusa.com -> Software Downloads. you must upgrade incrementally, several times (ie from 4.2 to 4.3 to 4.4).
  • nVidia video
    • latest unified driver, for 5200 / 5600 / 6600 / 7600 cards
  • PuTTY
    • Dream for one day: Defaults for fraser and our shell box?
  • RealPlayer
    • when installing RealPlayer, manually de-select every single media-type which has another association already (such as Windows Media Player). Installing other players (like Quicktime) after RealPlayer will ensure they handle the media-types they should. Restrict RealPlayer to as few media-types as possible.)
    • disable the Real Message Center. Turn it off so it doesn't even load in the System Tray.
  • OpenOffice 2.0
  • WinSCP
    • Dream, for one day: include defaults for connecting to tirpitz, surrey, and fraser
  • Lexmark T630-capable printer drivers
  • HP 4600n-capable printer drivers
    • printer-info needs to be added to Research web-info:
    • IP-addresses, location, capabilities, where to get supplies, how to add them in Linux/Irix/OS-X/WinXP
    • how to query the printer for int. info (IP-address, name, no. of pages, toner-levels, etc)
  • Windows Server Update Services - Automated Windows Updates

Linux

Complete install of SuSE 9.3 Pro.

  • Auto-update.
  • Both KDE and GNOME, maybe some other WMs too.
  • Development tools
    • Eclipse (Java & C++ support)
    • Fortran stuff
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • totem, mplayer, xine?
    • fully working!!! DeCSS, MP3, AAC, etc
  • K3B for cd/dvd writing
    • Mark: add ldap users to cd writing group!
    • Robin: SUSE9.3 should have pam_console, which is the proper solution.
