Make sure the diradm.conf file has the following settings on spitfire: 

SAMBAPATHPREPEND='\\\SPITFIRE\Users'
AUTOMOUNT_HASHING='${key}' # no home directory hashing 
AUTOMOUNT_USERDIRBASE="209.87.56.230:/home/users"
AUTOMOUNT_GROUPDIRBASE="209.87.56.230:/home/projects"
